It wouldn’t be a Greek dinner without tzatziki on the menu! This popular dip is a mixture of thick, tart Greek yogurt with fresh cucumber, garlic and herbs.

All combined, you’ll have a creamy, fresh, versatile dip that you are going to want to make all of the time!
This tzatziki recipe is great to use as a dip with vegetables and pita or used to top a burger, gyro or salad!
This dip can be served as an appetizer with a platter of pita chips, naan, tortilla chips or vegetable crudité.
It can be used to top sandwiches like falafel pitas, burgers, gyros and more!
You can also use it alongside grilled meats as a dipping sauce. When we were in Athens, we had grilled beef, lamb, chicken, seafood and sausage – all served with delicious tzatziki sauce!

Greek yogurt
mayonnaise (optional)
lemon
garlic
English cucumber
fresh dill
salt & pepper
olive oil
pita & fresh vegetables (for serving)
I like to use 2% milkfat Greek yogurt for this recipe. Using a low fat Greek yogurt will cause your tzatziki to get much more watery once all of your other ingredients are mixed in!
Mayonnaise might seem like an odd ingredient to add to this recipe but it helps to cut the tartness of the yogurt. Feel free to omit if you don’t care for mayonnaise.
English cucumber works best for this recipe. The skin and seeds of English cucumbers are softer, giving the tzatziki a better consistency (should you decide to not seed your cucumbers).
Want to know my inspiration for this recipe? My trip to Athens, of course! Check out my post What to See and Do in Athens!
In medium sized mixing bowl, combine Greek yogurt and mayonnaise until smooth.
Add grated cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, dill, salt and pepper. Still until combined.
Cover tightly and refrigerate for at least one hour prior to serving.
To serve, drizzle with olive oil and a sprinkle of dill or paprika.
Use as a dip for pita and vegetables or serve on top of a burger, gyro or salad.
Enjoy!
