One of my favorite memories from my trips to Spain is sitting stage side at Corral de la Moreria – the flamenco, the food, the SANGRIA. This traditional sangria recipe was inspired by my visit there.

You will find sangria just about everywhere in Spain, with each restaurant or tapas bar creating it slightly different.
Sangria from Spain and Portugal most commonly contains red wine, liquor and fresh fruit.
Red Wine
Brandy
Orange Juice
Cinnamon Sticks
Sugar
Fruit – Oranges, Lemons & Limes
When choosing a wine for this recipe, I typically go with a dry red from Spain. There is no need to choose an expensive wine but make sure it is something that you would enjoy drinking on its own.
You can find many different flavors of brandy at the liquor store and most will work for this recipe. Apple, peach, apricot, cherry and blackberry are typically available and add an extra fruity kick to this drink.
Allowing the sangria to sit overnight will allow all the flavors to meld and taste its best!
When ordering by the pitcher, sangria is typically served with a large wooden spoon to allow you to serve the fruit without splashing.
Feel free to serve chilled with a glass of ice or enjoy at room temperature!
Begin by placing half of your fruit into a large pitcher. Add sugar and muddle to release some of the fruit juice.
Add brandy and orange juice to the pitcher and mix with a large wooden spoon until combined with the fruit.
Pour the bottle of wine into the pitcher and add the remaining fruit slices & cinnamon sticks. Stir to combine.
Allow to sit for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Sangria can be served with glasses of ice or room temperature.
For a light, refreshing twist, add a splash of club soda before serving.
I hope you enjoy this traditional sangria recipe!
