Are you planning on visiting Naples, Capri and Pompeii?
Just a quick train ride from Rome, Naples is a great city to stay and make various day trips to see some of Italy’s great treasures such as Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Capri and the Amalfi Coast.

Unfortunately, when we visited Naples there was some political unrest that limited some of the sites we were able to see at the time. Instead, we chose to spend the majority of our time just outside of the city, visiting Pompeii and the island of Capri.
If you are visiting Naples, Capri and Pompeii, check out some of my sight seeing ideas below!
Built by the King of Sicily, Charles I of Anjou, this palace was then given to the aristocratic Caracciolo family. The original castle was destroyed by an earthquake but was rebuilt in 1584 and now serves as a hotel.
The staff here were inviting and friendly. We always felt very safe while staying at this hotel. The courtyard was a nice place to enjoy a cocktail in the evening and we had a delicious meal at the hotel restaurant as well!

This is the place Julia Roberts ate a pizza in the movie version of Eat, Pray, Love and, as you can imagine, they happen to have some really fantastic pizza. Your options are pizza with cheese or pizza without cheese. Add a cold beer and enjoy. Do yourself a favor and order an entire pizza for yourself.
Chances are, you will have to wait a bit for your chance to get inside this shop, but you wont be disappointed. It’s well worth the wait.
To get to Pompeii, we took a train from Napoli Centrale station. The train took approximately 35 minutes and cost us about $4 per person each way. Once we arrived at the train station in Pompeii, we walked to the entrance of the ruins which took us about 30 minutes.
We visited in May and it was already extremely hot. I was surprised how few people were visiting at the same time. There were plenty of times when walking around that there wasn’t another person in site. It really gave us the opportunity to see all the sites without being rushed.
We took the high speed ferry from Naples to Capri and it takes about 1 hour. The cost is about $24 per person each way. If you decide to take the last ferry back to Naples, make sure you are on time getting to the ferry terminal! They run on time (almost exactly) and you will need to wait until the following day to catch the next ferry if you miss the last one!
There are multiple ways to get up to the main piazza in Capri – taxi, bus, walking and funicular. Unless you are in a hurry, I suggest either taking a stroll or using the funicular. The funicular runs between the port in Marina Grande and the Capri Piazzetta. Either way, take in all the views on your trip to the top.
Book a private boat tour or join a group. Either way, a boat tour along the coast of Capri is a great way to see the beautiful coastline.
You’ll know you have arrived at the Blue Grotto when you see a line of boats waiting to enter. You will transfer into a small paddle boat and make your way into the small opening to see the cavern. The entrance is just 3 feet high so you will lay on your back to be able to enter into see the bright blue waters.
Not only is this a calming place to take a walk or stop for a rest, you will find some of the best views of the coastline. Make sure to get a good view of Via Krupp – the winding road and the Faraglioni rocks – Stella, Mezzo, and Scopolo (home to the blue lizards).
Wind your way through the old stone streets and check out some of the cool shops on the island. You’ll find anything from designer shops such as Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Louis Vuitton on Via Camerelle to fish shops and produce markets on some of the other connecting streets.
There is no shortage of restaurants with fantastic views in both Naples, Capri and Pompeii. Grab yourself a outdoor table and enjoy the people watching while eating some traditional Italian food.
A frozen limoncello cocktail and a delicious seafood pizza are some pretty great choices!
