My Favorite Acai Bowls

It’s hard to go to a juice bar or health food shop without seeing acai bowls on the menu. Even though they have been around for quite some time now, they are still massively popular and are a really healthy breakfast option.

Acai bowls are so versatile and can be made a million different ways – using all of your favorite fruits! I even add collagen powder into mine!

Acai berries are grown in Central and South America. The whole fruit looks like a purple cranberry when ripe but arrives to most consumers in pulp form since the fruit contains a large seed that is removed when processing.

These berries are rich in antioxidants, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids and fiber.

I normally purchase my acai packets at Trader Joe’s. They are found in the freezer section with all of the other frozen fruit. Unlike other frozen acai puree I have seen at grocery stores, these packets only contain acai puree – no added sugar or other fillers.

Customizing

This recipe will show you how to make my favorite bowls but these bowls are versatile and can be modified to your liking. These are the main components with ideas for customizing:

Acai packets – I use the puree packets from Trader Joe’s but most grocery stores sell these in the frozen fruit section.

Fruit – Bananas, mangos, peaches, berries, pineapple and dragon fruit are all great options.

Liquid – My favorites are lemonade or the coconut whole milk yogurt from Trader Joes. You could also use juice, yogurt or milk (oat, soy, almond or regular).

Toppings – I like bananas, blueberries, mango, granola, coconut, toasted almonds and chia seeds. The goal is to add a bunch of different textures!

Getting all of the needed ingredients can be expensive but luckily they will make quite a few bowls!

These bowls are best when the fruit is still slightly frozen – they are best eaten right away before they melt!

What You Will Need

3 ounce acai packet

1 cup frozen, sliced peaches

1/2 cup frozen mixed berries

1/2 cup lemonade

Blueberries, sliced bananas & mango

1 tsp. chia seeds

1/4 cup shredded coconut

1/3 cup granola

1/4 cup toasted, sliced almonds

2 tbsp. almond butter

How to Make Acai Bowls

In a blender or food processor, add the frozen acai puree, frozen peaches and frozen mixed berries. Pulse until peaches and berries are in small pieces. It will look crumbly at this point.

Add honey and lemonade.

Blend until smooth.

Pour smoothie mixture into your serving bowl.

Top with fruit, granola, shredded coconut, chia seeds, toasted almonds and almond butter.

Serve immediately.

As you can see, these bowls are really easy to make and are the perfect, healthy start to your day or a great snack for some needed energy!
