On one of our family vacations to Orlando, we went to a Japanese restaurant that also had fantastic options for kids. Our son ordered a kids bento box that came with fruit & candy sushi for dessert. He loved it and we have been making it at home ever since.

If you have a child that likes to help out in the kitchen, they will love getting to create their very own sushi and practice using chop sticks!
There are so many different candy & fruit options that would work well for this – just use whatever you like best!
Love the idea but don’t have the time to make this? Check out this candy sushi bento box!
One batch of Rice Krispies Treats (follow instructions on box)
Fruit (I used raspberries, kiwi and blackberries)
One small can of mandarin oranges
Candy (I used Swedish Fish, sour gummy octopus and gummy snakes)
Start by cutting your fruit. Kiwi should be peeled and then sliced into rounds then quarters. Raspberries and blackberries should be halved lengthwise (halving the raspberries and blackberries keep them from rolling off of the sushi). Mandarin oranges should be drained.
To prevent your sushi from getting soggy, place mandarin oranges and kiwi slices on paper towels to absorb any extra liquid.
Unroll Fruit Roll-Ups so they are flat. Cut one Fruit Roll-Up into long strips about 1/2 inch wide. Set aside.
Make Rice Krispies Treats according to the box. Once you have removed the mixture from the heat and they are cool enough to handle, begin making ‘sushi rice balls’. They should be about the size of a small egg.
After you have made your sushi rice balls, use the remaining Rice Krispies Treats to make two rolls. Wrap the mixture around Swedish Fish or any gummy candy that you have to resemble the fish inside the roll.
Once you have two rolls, wrap them in the Fruit Roll-Ups. Each roll will likely need two Fruit Roll-Ups to cover them. Using a sharp knife, cut each roll into six pieces.
I used the blackberries on one of the rolls to resemble black tobiko (fish roe).
Set aside.
Use the candy and fruit that you have to top the Rice Krispies balls. For mine, I made four with a sour octopus on top, four with Swedish Fish and a Fruit Roll-Up ‘seaweed’ wrap, and six with fruit on top.
A helpful tip – spray your hands lightly with cooking spray to prevent the Rice Krispies Treats from sticking to your hands while making your sushi.
To make this even easier, try using pre-made Rice Krispies Treats from the store, simply cut them or roll them into the shape that you need!
Using one recipe of Rice Krispies Treats will make you about 14 sushi pieces and 2 sushi rolls.
It is important to have all of your supplies set out and ready because the Rice Krispies will harden quickly after removing from the stove.
Looking to add a chocolate twist? Drizzle with melted chocolate to resemble eel sauce or sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles to resemble black sesame seeds.
Our kids love sushi and we have this fun sushi playset at home that they play with all of the time too!
This is a fun, delicious treat that is easy to make. It is a great family activity in the kitchen or can be made for birthday parties or class treats.
Let me know what fruit & candy you like to use when making this treat!
