Homemade Sour Mix

Have you ever wanted to make margaritas at home but couldn’t find a good sour mix? Luckily, it is incredibly easy to make at home. Check out how to make my homemade sour mix!

I have found that most of the store bought mixes taste artificial and are filled with preservatives. This sour mix tastes so fresh and will make the best cocktails!

This also makes a great hosting gift to bring to a summer BBQ.

Not only is this perfect for margaritas, you can also use this sour mix to make Whiskey Sours, Long Island Iced Teas, Amaretto Sours and more!

One batch makes just over a quart of sour mix and will be enough for about 25 cocktails.

If you don’t need that much sour mix at one time, throw some in the freezer. This recipe freezes really well! I like to freeze it in pint containers; this way I always have some on hand when I am in the mood for a margarita.

You can squeeze all the citrus by hand but this hand held juicer is inexpensive, doesn’t take up much space in your cabinets and works really well!

What You Will Need

2 navel oranges

2 lemons

10 limes

1 cup sugar

1 cup water

How to Make

Begin by making your simple syrup with equal parts sugar and water. In medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water and stir. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until all of the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

This will yield about 1 1/3 cups of simple syrup.

Prior to juicing your citrus, place the whole fruits in your microwave for approximately 20 seconds. This will allow you to get more juice from your fruit!

Juice your citrus fruit. In total, you are looking for 3 cups of citrus juice. If your oranges, lemons and limes are on the smaller side, you will likely need to purchase more than I have listed.

Once your simple syrup has cooled completely, combine the citrus juice and simple syrup.

Using a strainer or cheesecloth, strain your sour mix to ensure that all seeds have been removed.

Store your sour mix in air tight containers.

This sour mix will last in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. It also freezes really well so make some extra and have it on hand the next time you want to make a cocktail!
