Earth Day Projects For Kids

Every April, I make sure to plan some creative activities for the kids to do in celebration of Earth day. Here are some Earth Day projects for kids that might inspire you too!

Check out some fun ideas to get your kids learning about Earth and spark an interest in taking care of the awesome planet that they live on!

Make a Terrarium

These are fun for kids to make because there are so many different layers and ways to put them together. They are relatively low maintenance too for those who don’t have a green thumb.

Our terrariums at home often have dinosaur or unicorns in them. Customize them however you would like!

Check out my post How to Create Your Own Terrarium for more instructions on how to complete this fun project at home!

Earth Collage

For this project, all you need are magazines, construction paper, scissors and glue sticks.

I cut out a circle from construction paper and made a rough sketch of a globe on it.

Then the kids ripped out blue and green pictures from the magazines and glued them on the globe.

This activity is super easy but a great conversation starter to learn more about Earth.

Recycle Broken Crayons

This is a great way to recycle all the broken crayon pieces that you have lying around your house! There are so many different shapes that you can create and even some cool color combinations too!

To begin, preheat your oven to 250 degrees.

Next, we lined a baking sheet with parchment paper and placed a silicone flower mold on it.

After this, we placed all the broken pieces of crayons into the molds. You’ll need enough crayon pieces within each mold so that, when melted, it’s filled. This means having the crayon pieces slightly “heaping” in each mold.

Place your baking tray into the oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes.

Carefully remove from oven and allow to cool.

Make Watercolor Earth

To make these, we used green and blue Crayola markers to draw shapes on coffee filters. Once we were done coloring, we used a spray bottle filled with water to spray each filter.

The water will make the colors bleed together and you will get an earth-like appearance.

Just make sure to do this on newspaper otherwise the ink will leak through on your counters!

Once dried, you can use these to make paper flowers, an Earth Day garland or many other crafting projects!

Hands-On Reading

There are so many great kids books out there to teach kids about the earth. Grab a few the next time you are at the store or read some that you might already have!

We like to supplement our reading with toys that will reinstate what they are learning about in the books. We love this little felt garden, putting together ‘green’ puzzles, or even planting some seeds that we can then put into our herb garden once they have sprouted!

Chances are, you already have plenty of things around the house to pull out to allow the kids to have hands-on learning to make things easier for them to remember!

Plant Food Scraps

Not many people know that you can grow more vegetables from your food scraps! Some of the easiest to try are scallions, celery and even romaine!

Cut the leaves off of your head of romaine, leaving at least 2 inches on the bottom and place in a small bowl of water (cut leaves facing up). Within a few days, you should see roots sprouting from the bottom and you will have new lettuce within a couple of weeks!

Learn About Earth’s Layers

For this project, we used construction paper, scissors, a glue stick and round paper fasteners.

This is especially fun for kids that are learning about volcanoes in school!

I created a simple template to label the different layers.

Next, we cut out different sized circles and shaped to recreate Earth’s layers and fastened them together with a paper fastener.

These are just a few ideas of crafts to do with kids to learn more about our planet.

My best advice is just get out there!

Whether you have a home on a large amount of property and can plant a few beautiful trees in your yard each year or live in a small apartment and can plant a small herb garden in a planter, your kids will love being able to get their hands dirty and learn about the environment!

I hope you liked some of these Earth Day projects for kids. Comment below and let me know your favorite!
