A Review of Sandals Regency La Toc in St. Lucia

Every now and then, my husband and I like to go on a vacation that requires very little research and will consist of mostly laying by the ocean and decompressing. A chance to reset, read a good book, and take naps. Lots of naps.

All inclusive resorts, such as Sandals, take care of all of the details for you. The vacation can be as busy or as relaxing as you want it to be. All of the dining, premium liquor, wine and on-site activities are included. We had previously vacationed at Sandals Ochi in Jamaica and had a great time so we decided to return to Sandals.

Sandals Resorts are a line of adults-only, all inclusive resorts geared towards couples. All of their properties are located within the Caribbean in the Bahamas, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada and Antigua. If you are looking to bring the kids along, Sandals has a sister company called Beaches which is family friendly. They have resorts in Turks and Caicos and Jamaica.

For this trip, we were looking to visit one of the Caribbean Islands that we hadn’t been to yet and decided on St. Lucia.

St. Lucia is one of the eastern most Caribbean Islands and is located just below Martinique. The average temperature is 80°F year round, making it a great destination any time of the year. The official language is English and the currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar.

Sandals has three resorts in St. Lucia and, with their Stay at One, Play at Three program, you can visit the other resorts at your leisure. The resort offers complimentary transportation, allowing you to enjoy the restaurants and activities at each of the other resorts.

Once arriving at Hewanorra International Airport (UVF), you will make your way to the Sandals guest area. Here you will check-in and wait for your transportation to the resort. The waiting area has refreshments and snacks while you wait. The travel time is about one hour to the resort. Group transportation to the resort is included. Private transportation can be arranged at an additional cost.

If you are prone to motion sickness (like I am), it might be worth the cost for private transportation. We were seated in the back of the van and the curvy roads made for an uncomfortable ride.

Because the resort knew when we would be arriving, the check-in process was quick and easy. Our luggage was delivered to our room as soon as we arrived and we were on the beach shortly thereafter.

We stayed in one of their Emerald Honeymoon Ocean view rooms which happens to be one of their lower priced rooms. The room offered a king size bed, french balcony and all of the other amenities that you would expect from a resort. There was also a mini fridge stocked with water, juice and beer. There was a bottle of sparkling wine in our room upon our arrival which was a great way to kick-off our vacation.

Luckily we stayed at the resort long enough to be able to enjoy all nine restaurants that they have on site. Our favorite was The Pitons with their open air seating and tradition Caribbean cuisine.

Other dining options include French, Italian, Mediterrarean and English cuisine. The food was better than many other all-inclusives that we have been to and there were many options to choose from.

As for the cocktails, while they always tasted good, they are also very weak. This was also our experience at Sandals Ochi in Jamaica. Most evenings we would enjoy a few cocktails before our dinner reservation and then drink wine with our meals.

All of the Sandals Resorts always have evening entertainment including karaoke, beach parties, live bands and casino nights.

The best part about staying at Sandals are all of the included activities. You never actually have to leave the resort to have plenty to do. Scuba diving, kayaking, snorkeling, paddle boarding, windsurfing and many more activities are all included with your stay.

For land sports you can enjoy basketball, volleyball, tennis, croquet, lawn chess, pool tables, golf, bocce ball, horseshoes and more. While the greens fees for golfing are included with your stay, you will need to rent clubs if you did not travel with your own.

Our overall opinion of the resort was that it could use some updating. The grounds were always clean and the landscaping was well cared for but the resort was in need of a face lift. Our room and bathroom felt outdated.

I have read that they are doing some refurbishments at this time so I am sure there will be improvements to some of the aesthetics of the resort.

We booked a few tours to do during our vacation including horseback riding, ziplining and a speed boat tour to Soufriere. We booked all of these tours through the Concierge at the hotel. I would suggest booking the excursions prior to your stay or on the first day that you arrive. Many of the popular excursions sell out ahead of time.

The horseback ride was through a small village and along the beach. Mid way through the ride, we cooled down in the ocean and stopped at a shop for a freshly tapped coconut. There was also a gentleman selling fresh aloe for sunburns. He approached us after noting the red glow coming from my husband and we happily bought a large piece. He proceeded to spread it all over my husbands shoulders. We all had a good laugh. It was the best couple of dollars we spent on the trip.

Treetop Adventure Park has twelve different zip lines and is listed as the top attraction to do in St. Lucia on TripAdvisor. We had a great time hiking through the jungle to each zip line platform. We never had to wait more than a couple of minutes to be hooked up to a line.

The excursion that we enjoyed the most was the speed boat to Soufriere. The boat picked us up right on the beach at the resort and we enjoyed cocktails and beer while cruising the coastline. We saw the Pitons, visited Marigot Bay and Sulphur Springs volcano, had a delicious lunch at The Still Beach House and went for a swim at Toraille Waterfall.

The beauty of the Pitons is undeniable. The volcanic formations of Gros Piton and the smaller Petit Piton are the two iconic symbols of St. Lucia. You can view them from one of the many boat excursions offered on the island (like we did) or you can hike them if you are looking to break a sweat.

Sulphur Springs Park is located within a dormant volcano on the island. Here, you can view the bubbling sulfur springs and enjoy a therapeutic volcanic mud bath.

Although we had a great time on this vacation, my husband and I agreed that there are many other destinations within the Caribbean that we prefer. We are happy that we had the chance to see St. Lucia but we look forward to exploring all of the other islands of the Caribbean in our upcoming travels.
